Challenging the status quo is not unusual for Rachel Chiu, Director-Financial Services at Destination Honda Burnaby. In just a few years, she has found ways to provide extraordinary guest service while driving new business growth and developing an award-winning team.
Rachel landed her first role in the auto industry as a Business Manager while completing her Bachelor in Business at SFU.
Day-to-day, her role is to develop, coach, train and monitor the performance of the dealership’s Business Office team by strategizing new targets, instilling best practices and ensuring guests receive the best products for their needs based on what they can afford. A recent accomplishment Rachel is most proud of is the Honda Canada Council of Sales Leadership Award, bestowed to those who achieve exemplary customer satisfaction, outstanding sales performance and exceptional knowledge of Honda products. In achieving such a distinguished award she strongly advocates that any “woman in the industry looking to progress in her career must demonstrate mastery of her skill, and a desire to voice change where benefits can be realized for the company and team. Limitations on women in the auto industry are no longer based on what we’re told or made to believe we can and can’t achieve. Our only limits are those we place upon ourselves by not pursuing and applying new knowledge to our roles.” How does she do it? Rachel attends courses during non-work hours with a desire to continue learning and applying herself. One thing Rachel truly believes in is mentorship. Asked how companies can support personal development and engagement of women in the auto industry, she advises that “succession planning and cross training across functions is key – this allows the broader team to develop a greater understanding of the scope of roles that exist in a dealership and allows team members to explore and find the right fit for each personality type.
Through her dedication and commitment Rachel has brought discipline and innovation to a traditional business model, and we are proud to have her as a role model for aspiring business women in auto.
