How to Check Your Engine Oil

Keeping your vehicle’s engine oil at the right level is critical for preserving the life of your engine. In addition, it’ll ensure your vehicle is able to run properly and smoothly. Regularly checking your oil level will help prevent major damages which are typically costly to repair. Oil is important because it acts as a lubricator for the major components of the engine to prevent them from wearing quickly. It also prevents dirt buildup and keeps the engine clean.

Here’s our guide on how to check your vehicle’s engine oil:

1. Turn off your enginecapture
It’s recommended you park your car on a level spot. Turn of your engine and allow your vehicle to cool down for at least 2 minutes before checking the oil.

2. Locate your dipstickcapture1
Lift up your hood and secure it. Next, locate the engine gauge or dipstick. If you’re unsure, refer back to your owner’s manual.

In most vehicles, the dipstick is usually a bright yellow-coloured handle, labelled ‘Engine Oil’.

3. Pull out the dipstickcapture3
Carefully pull out the dipstick and wipe it clean with a towel. This will ensure the correct measurement.

Note: Be careful the oil does not drip onto your engine.

4. Insert the dipstick back incapture4
Re-insert the dipstick back into the gauge; making sure it’s fully inserted.

5. Pull the dipstick back out capture7
Now, pull the dipstick out again and check the oil level.

Note: Do not turn it upside down, otherwise the oil will run upward and you’ll have to restart.

6. Read/ inspect oil levelcapture5
The oil level can be read by looking at the dipstick. You’ll see two lines (minimum and maximum) marked at the bottom of the stick. Your oil level should be between the minimum and maximum lines. If your oil level is below the bottom mark, you’ll need to add a liter of oil.
